Cosplay Inspirations: Wonder Woman Edition

Meagan Marie is on the author's list of best designs for Wonder Woman in the upcoming 'Man of Steel' sequel.

With the new “Justice League”-like Man of Steel sequel coming in 2015, this gives many cosplayers out there a chance to use their imaginations to see what the impending film’s characters will look like. But who’s really interested in what Batman or Superman will be wearing when we’ve seen countless superhero films with these two DC Comics veterans?

The one super heroine who I’m really interested to see on the silver screen is none other than Wonder Woman. It’s been almost three decades since the talented Lynda Carter brought this character to life and I’ve definitely had some withdrawal symptoms. I’ve had the amazing privilege to scour the worldwide Internet to find some talented and amazing cosplayers that I believe nailed our beloved Amazon princess.

One notion of DC Comics that I have always admired is their costume authenticity in their films. As a cosplayer myself, I always strive to bring my character out of the cartoon/anime that I’ve chosen and bring them to life, meaning, not so bright colors that you get from the TV screen but what I believe they would look like if they had to actually pick out their uniform at their local department store. Here are some handpicked cosplayers from yours truly; hopefully DC will take some notes!

First up we have the lovely Svetlana Quindt, AKA: Kamui from Nuremburg, Germany. When I stumbled across this cosplay I was literally taken aback. What’s not to like about it? This woman does all of her own armor and photo editing! What I liked most was the clash of Greek/Amazonian qualities with a Soul Caliber edge (think: Ivy). While I don’t think a design similar to this will be in the feature film, it would definitely be nice to see it adapted to the Justice League cartoon.

The next cosplayer I found is Anna Ormeli. This cosplay stood out to me because of its realistic and modern approach to Wonder Woman. The costume design is from the game ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us.’ Anna has truly captured the art of the video game and brought it to life, making it easy to see this in the upcoming film.

Who doesn’t like a classic super heroine adapted into a steampunk/WWII look? Cosplayer Jessica L. Gonzalez took a unique approach to Wonder Woman with this WWII inspired outfit bringing out a new age in this character. The leather jacket and guns are a nice addition (though I doubt Wonder Woman really needs guns) and the interesting twist on the wrist cuffs and bodice makes this a personal favorite.

I’d love to see one of the men in ‘300’ step up to this Amazon goddess. Cosplayer Meagan Marie took this Wonder Woman rendition to the next level with classic Grecian influences. From the headgear down to the footwear this cosplay emanates what I would imagine the Amazons on Themyscira wore. Kudos, Meagan!

The Classic Wonder Woman. Valerie Perez brings out the very original with this piece. If I could imagine any costume that would make it into the Justice League film this would be it. The coloring of the fabric is just right, the shape, and overall character personified is perfect. Pretty sure Lynda Carter would shed a tear.
