Five Reasons Geeks Can Celebrate the Fall Television Lineup

What do you get when you combine the worlds of Marvel, Wonderland, and vampire-laden Victorian society? If you’ve followed network trailers, you know this incredible mix of macabre and marvelous is the baseline for 2013’s fall television lineup. From beloved Agent Coulson to John Lithgow as the White Rabbit, lovers of literature, comics, and stories are in for several surprises this season.

“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Comic lovers of all ages sat up to take note when news about Agent Coulson’s return hit the trailers. Adding nerd-cred to the show is the fact that it’s partially helmed by Joss Whedon, who’s known for delivering the dark, heroic stories fans love. From “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to the “The Avengers,” Whedon does heroes better than almost anyone. Actors, writers, and others from shows like “Angel,” “Dollhouse,” “Heroes,” and “Lost” come together in what is set to be a spectacular geekstravanganza on ABC. The show premieres September 24, at 8 p.m. EST.

“Almost Human”

Cops and…robots? Fox brings classic sci-fi elements to life in this new series about humans and androids. The show draws on an experienced cast and crew, including Karl Urban of “Star Trek” and Mackenzie Crook of “Game of Thrones.” Add epic director J.J. Abrams into the fold, and you’ve got a science fiction legend waiting to unfold. Tune in Monday, November 4, at 8 p.m. EST.

“The Tomorrow People”

Mutating human heroes is an old concept, and this certainly isn’t X-Men. The CW is hoping to capitalize on the popularity of “Arrow” to launch this “Heroes”-style series into the limelight. Like most of the geek-friendly shows launching this fall, cast and crew for “The Tomorrow People” are pulled from past winners like “Lost,” but the fact that this is a remake that comes on the heels of both successful and unsuccessful shows with a similar theme leaves the series vulnerable. A powerful trailer, which the CW launched in early May, is enough to recommend this show for a trial run. Catch the action on October 9, just after “Arrow.”

“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland”

Spinning off of the popular “Once Upon a Time,” this Alice-inspired series has at least one thing going for it. John Lithgow plays the White Rabbit. Long-time geeks may be interested to see what the villain-turned alien-turned serial killer has to bring to such a whimsical role. With current trends in television and a crew with credentials that include “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Being Human,” and “Charmed,” you can bet this whimsical series is going to show a dark side. Travel down the rabbit hole with this series starting October 10, at 8 p.m. EST.

“Dracula”

Speaking of a dark side, there’s probably not a show coming this fall with more bite than NBC’s “Dracula.” NBC is saying no to the fad of teeny-bopper vamp series and going straight for the neck with this Bram Stoker-inspired series. With Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the title character, the show explores the vamp’s life in Victorian London. Though some viewers feel the vamp genre needs to die a rapid, stake-pierced death, there are plenty of purists who should be excited about seeing a real vampire series. Get bitten by this story starting October 25, at 10 p.m. EST.
