Five Reasons To Pick Up Garth Ennis’ ‘Crossed’

The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and there is nothing better than a little gore to brighten up an already bright day. Welcome to the world of Crossed, written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Jacen Burrows. This world of blood, death, sex, and gore is exactly what you need for a sunny Spring day.

Avatar Press really took a chance, in my opinion, when first publishing this work of art. The scenes are detailed, the story is functionally dysfunctional, and the characters, well, don’t get attached. If that’s not enough, here are the top five reasons you should get your hands on a copy of Crossed.

  1. There is NO order. Seriously. You can grab the latest issue right now, and aside from being confused as to how and why everyone is naked with a cross on their face, you can delve right into the stories of survival and horror.
  2. The characters. In each issue there is such a heart-wrenching story, no literally it is heart-wrenching. I don’t know whether to have a heart attack, vomit, or try to kill the characters myself. I told you not to get attached.
  3. It’s the apocalypse! That means anything can happen. Like a man without limbs being turned into a bookbag or a large man running around beating people with a… Nope, not spoiling that one (grab the Crossed trade paperback No. 1).
  4. Love is in the air. And then it gets crushed. For those of you that believe those apocalyptic romances we see on TV and in movies are complete bogus loads of flaming poop, this is for you. Love in the Crossed world is a bit more — realistic — covered in blood, guts, and other bodily fluids. (Please, please use your imagination. It only gets worse.)
  5. Garth Ennis. That name should be enough to get you sprinting to the nearest comic book store. His career has spanned from Vertigo to DC to Avatar Press to Marvel. He’s worked on titles such as Judge Dredd, Hellblazer (Ennis’ first American comic), Hitman, and Preacher (even a few Marvel favorites like Spider-Man and Thor). Now you have every reason in the world to get Crossed.

So go march to your local comic book store, support a small business (aka the store), and picked up either a trade or single issue of Crossed. I prefer the trade — more stories to read through in one sitting.

(Ed. Note: I feel I need to impress upon the reader just how immensely disturbing and depraved Crossed is. The Feature image above is one of maybe three out of hundreds in a Google image search from Crossed that I could comfortably publish.)
