My Best Cosplay Shots of 2013: The Ladies

Gina B knocked it out of the park with her cosplay of Urd.

If I thought picking the best photos for yesterday’s rundown of the best male cosplay shots of 2013 was tough, today’s was even more challenging. In fact, I couldn’t stick to 12, so I present a baker’s dozen of the most amazing cosplay shots featuring ladies I took in 2013.

Like the last two retrospectives — of genderbent and crossplay photos, and the gents — the list is purely subjective, in some cases based on the best shot of a great cosplay, and in some cases an average shot of something truly outstanding.

The 12 best cosplay shots of the ladies I took in 2013 are:

Destiny Nickelsen has almost too many amazing cosplays to choose from, but I really liked her take on Harley Quinn from the game Injustice.

I love alternate takes on established characters and Liana Richardson's steampunk Ariel is a great example.

I was a fan of The Rocketeer before Ridd1e was born, I think. But I like her take on it.

I like obscure cosplays done well, and The Chainmail Chick nailed the Queen of the Damned.

Kristen Hughey's take on Jade from Mortal Kombat is awesome, but I admit I like this as much for the lighting. OK, I'm a photo nerd.

I admit this choice is based on something other than just the shot. Mhysa Cosplay actually built a freakin' loom to weave the cloth for her top, because she couldn't find the right kind.

Nicole Marie Jean only wore this Mera cosplay for a short time at Dragon Con, but it is still one of my favorite versions of her.

I was lucky enough to get to shoot Yaya Han twice this tear, but her Fiora is my favorite.

Another really obscure cosplay, Red Monika, by the amazing Madam Mercy.

Sure, this one is in her because of the sheer amount of skin, but also because Jacqueline Goehner is not only amazingly daring, but actually figured out how to make Witchblade work with no wardrobe failures.

Jen-Jen Noodle Bowl cosplays some beautiful female characters, so her excellent job doing Killer Croc was a wonderful change.

Wyldryce Cosplay has done some great cosplays this year -- Shi, The Phantom, Elektra -- but this is special. She is cosplaying Darna, a Filipino superhero, done to honor the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Obscure, beautiful, well done -- everything I like and a great reason to do it on top of that.
