Video Game Review: REMEMBER ME

Remember Me is an action adventure, beat’em up video game developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Capcom. It was released in June 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Remember Me is the newest intellectual property from Capcom and is a game that features some very unique game mechanics. As for the story, you play as Nilin, a memory hunter, in Neo-Paris in the year 2084. The Memorize Corporation has invented a new brain implant called the Sensation Engine or Sensen, which enables roughly 99% of the population to upload and share their memories as well as remove the sad memories. This gives Memorize an immense degree of control over the population and enables them to establish a surveillance state. This leads to a group called “Errorists” whose mission is to bring down Memorize. Something I admire about this game, is the story is unique. I cannot recall a current game that has tried this kind of story before.

I like that it didn’t seem this was a perfect world, and enjoyed seeing the negative effects of this sensen as people that were addicted to it became one of your enemies early on in the game. The game features platforming, exploration and melee combat. The game introduces the mechanic of memory remixing entering, and rearranging a target’s memories to manipulate them. You will be able to accomplish this by replaying, & modifying a memory details to change the target’s memory. Another important mechanic is stealing memories from specific targets, and using points called Remembranes to replay the memory in real-time, however the mechanic isn’t really explored enough. I was kinda upset with this. There are only 4 memory remix sequence and I wish they exploded this more, because it made it very unique and interesting.

Combat and platforming, sadly, is pretty dull. Platforming is similar to parkour, and it is ideal to get around. But while you are traversing, the game makes you focus on where you are going by constantly reminding you where to jump to next. I’m chalking this up to help the player find their way around and after a while it gets annoying. I feel it is pretty basic, and platforming is quite easy to figure out. The combat is similar to the Batman Arkham games, without a parry, but makes up for it using evades. You set up these combos by utilizing the combo lab, where you make combos called Pressens. You gain these by earning & gaining Procedural Mastering Power or PMP with a limit of four combos being active at any one time. The four Pressen families are “Regen,””Power,” “Chain,” and “Cooldown.” By utilizing this, players can chain different moves together and can create various combinations and perks can be set up. However after certain moves and perks are obtained, I didn’t find myself changing my moves.

The graphics in the game are hit and miss. In game, they are pretty basic, and glitchy during cut-scenes. The city itself is amazing, however I found the game dull and repetitive. I would have been happy to see more in depth gameplay, but things kinda just seem to be going nowhere. It was a very unique story, had promising fresh game mechanics, however it gets dull, and doesn’t keep the player on the edge of their seat. I give Remember Me a 2 out of 5.
