Review: Frenchy and the Punk’s HEY HEY CABARET

Hey Hey Cabaret,” the latest release from Frenchy and the Punk, has been much anticipated by their fanbase. Whether it’s their music, personalities, or their crowd-funding campaign where they each appeared naked on camera to show they were laying it all out there to try and get this album funded, this has been an anticipated release across a number of genres as they have their hands in the Goth, Faerie, Steampunk, and countless other communities. With so much anticipation, how does this album fair?

What has always worked for Frenchy and the Punk’s sound is a combination of them knowing the varied audience they attract, their ability to rely on that audience and give them what they want without “pandering,” and their ability to create a very big sound as an acoustic guitar and drum duo. Frenchy and the Punk have always been able to create a very fun, fast-paced, and larger than life sound which is difficult for even a four-piece band to accomplish. Unless they are right in front of you, one constantly forgets that this is just two people.

What sets “Hey Hey Cabaret,” apart from their previous release “Happy Madness,” is that “Hey Hey Cabaret” seems a bit more focused. “Happy Madness,” showed off the full range of song-writing that F and the P can produce but “Hey Hey…” is all about the fast-paced fun cabaret vibe. Don’t get me wrong, “Hey Hey…” isn’t just a one note wonder, it has a lot of depth in both lyrical content (Silent Movie, I’m Free, and Le Chat Noir sung in Samantha (Frenchy)’s native tongue), and in their approach to song-writing and song-crafting (The Circus Parade). Very similar to their other efforts, you can tell F and the P had so much fun writing, recording, and just crafting this piece. I find myself headbanging to the title track Hey Hey Cabaret and Silent Movie, but dancing around to Steampunk Pixie, and Tie You Up.

“Hey Hey Cabaret,” is by far Frenchy and the Punk’s most focused and cohesive effort yet, and like all Frenchy and the Punk material it was fun to make and as a result is a lot of fun to listen to. Start to finish this is a well-crafted album that should be given an honest listen!
