My Thoughts on the Comic Books of July 8th, 2010

Here are my thoughts (quick reviews) on comics released on July 8th, 2010. Please be aware of spoilers.

Brightest Day: The Atom: Not being a strong fan of The Atom since The Sword of The Atom back in the 1980s, I wasn’t expecting much. I wasn’t impressed with how the writer was showcasing Ray Palmer’s powers during the strange “hostages in the library” fight scenes but the issue is good enough for me to check out the rest of this story in the upcoming story arc in Adventure Comics. I loved how the artist paralleled the first page with the last; showing Ray Palmer’s devastation. I hope the writer gets really creative with the full potential that The Atom is capable of.

Hit-Monkey #1 (of 3): Dear Writer. Monkey + Guns = Awesome. No need to explain his origins or use character development or have dialogue/monologue. More explosions please!

X-Force #28: I really don’t want to give a final review of what I think of the Second Coming Saga till the last few issues wrap up the storyline, but so far the only thought I keep thinking is, “How long till Nightcrawler and Cable come back from the grave?” And speaking of things from the grave…

X-men #1: Mutants versus Vampires should be a cool concept to revisit once again but for some reason as I was reading this I wasn’t feeling it. Perhaps I’m feeling vampire fatigued with the media’s bombardment of the Twilight movies? The issue overall is not bad, although I’m curious to read in the next few issues why vampires, out of all the things to focus on, would target mutants now. By the way, if any of you read The Death of Dracula one shot last week, tell me this: after 70 issues Tomb of Dracula in the 1970s, afterwards fighting everyone in the Marvel Universe, from Dr. Strange to The X-Men, even the Thor and The Silver Surfer… he was killed off (and caught off guard) by his youngest son (whose appearance screamed out I’M GOING BETRAY MY FATHER) and some of his cronies? Is Marvel going to kill off Doctor Doom by slipping on a banana peel next?

That’s all for now, will try to share more later this weekend.
