Anime NYC 2018 Saturday Roundup and Cosplay Gallery

My Hero Academia cosplay has become increasingly popular over the course of the past year, and it appears to have hit a new peak during Anime NYC this year. It felt as if it almost took over the convention, with three separate MHA meetups on Saturday that I was aware of. I stopped by two of these meetups to grab some photos, and I took photos of a number of other MHA cosplayers I saw throughout the day as well, so this photo gallery will have a very healthy dose of people going Plus Ultra.

I’ll close out my Anime NYC 2018 coverage by driving home a point that I touched upon in my write-up that accompanied my first photo gallery from the event. Anime NYC drew 20,000 fans in its first year, and 36,000 this year. There was only one notable problem I noticed during the convention, which was the long queue wait times on Friday morning. A plan was put in place to alleviate this problem the following morning, and the convention organizers openly addressed and admitted to the issue in a public post after the convention.

Far too often, I have seen convention organizers lean on the excuse “it’s our first year,” or something similar, when problems occur during a convention. Having people with experience, and learning from others with experience, is a key factor in running a successful event. Anime and comic conventions are not something new, and there are plenty of people out there to learn from. I believe it’s time to stop accepting the “new convention” excuse, and start expecting more from organizers. Almost every convention will encounter challenges in its first year — or its tenth, or twentieth for that matter. How these problems are handled can determine the future success of any event. And of course, it’s very important for those in charge of a convention to always be present and available throughout an entire event to ensure things run smoothly as possible.

I congratulate Anime NYC for successfully running a very large event in its second year, and look forward to returning in 2019, and for many years to come. I challenge other convention organizers to strive for the same level of excellence displayed by Anime NYC.

As a side note, this article and photo gallery will conclude my content for Nerd Caliber this year. There will be plenty more content from other contributors, including video coverage on YouTube from this event. Thank you to all of the cosplayers that made this a great year for me, and I will see you all in 2019!
