New York Comic Con was the second convention I ever attended, so I have a soft spot for it. 2019 was year seven for me, and it was genuinely amazing. I spent day one cosplaying with friends, interviewing artists, and was featured on the official NYCC Facebook page; day two was shooting incredible cosplayers in Photo Alley; and on day three I ran a panel I created that combines my love of cosplay and photography.

This was the first year I set up on so-called Photography Alley, aka outside on the lower level by the food trucks.  Photographers arrive 2 hours early to claim a spot, and set up their own little mini-studio along the walls.  The alley is jam-packed with people in line for food, waiting to do photos, talking to friends.  It’s pure madness and chaos, and makes for a long, exciting day of shooting with incredible cosplayers.  Thanks to friends who brought empanadas, water, and Heineken.

I was fortunate to snag a decent space along the wall, with enough room to set up lights.  The grey concrete backdrop has great texture and takes colored gel lights really well, allowing for some fun, creative shots.

Cosplayers in this gallery include: jara_the_cosplaya, sammyrubin, Scotty B Cosplay, Hikaru CosplayLestage Visuals, Jen Bunny Cosplay, jaclyn_koss, Jason Lownes – J-Low Cosplay, kamaricosplay, sveaterpunk, kevinvclose, and more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
