Game Bites: PlayStation’s Big Moment, and Epic v Apple’s Big Decision
Happy September, Labor Day, Rosh Hashanah and any other celebrations into September. This past week we saw some interesting and exciting news coming from PlayStation and some news on a recent case from Apple Vs Epic.
After Sony presented no PlayStation showcase at E3 or Gamescom we finally had their event and for many it was worth the wait. There were new games, big updates for PS5 titles, and a handful of release dates that many were waiting for. The PlayStation Showcase started out with the reveal of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. No word on a release date but it’s coming exclusively to PS5 and PC. Next was a brand new IP with big Bayonetta vibes called Project EVE. It’s a game full of massive weapons, and even bigger combos and moves, as you battle a horror show of monsters.
We got a look at the first gameplay footage for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands which now has a confirmed March 25, 2022 release date. We also got a look at the gameplay you should expect in Forspoken. Our heroine goes from a commute on a bus to discovering a portal that warps her to a majestic castle, in a game that should be coming in Spring 2022. Alan Wake Remastered was revealed which was a huge get for PlayStation fans as this is the first time the game has even been released on PlayStation.
We got a look at some previously announced games, such as Ghostwire: Tokyo with some gameplay, and more on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Sony revealed that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt, a battle royale game, will be coming to PS5 later this year. One of the cutest reveals of the PlayStation Showcase was Tchia; a brand new, open-world adventure. You’ll be able to explore a tropical archipelago on your boat, but also use your ability to possess animals and use them to solve puzzles in a very Breath of the Wild-like setting. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is coming to PS5 and PC in early 2022. Insomniac games had two releases at the showcase, the first being a cinematic trailer for a new game called Wolverine about, you guessed it, Wolverine. The second trailer from Insomniac was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which is bringing back Peter and Miles, and introducing Venom to the game. The end of the showcase ended with their big reveal, God of War Ragnarok. They showed off Thor as well as some other new and familiar faces in what looks to be an amazing sequel but so far has no release date with it.
On Friday, a California judge ruled on the influential Epic v. Apple lawsuit. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers concluded that Apple wasn’t unfairly monopolizing the mobile app space with iOS or its in-app purchasing system, and she ordered Epic to pay damages for violating its developer agreement with Fortnite. At the same time, she ordered Apple to remove its anti-steering rules. The anti-steering rules are policies banning developers from telling users about alternatives to Apple’s in-app purchase system. Epic had made 10 claims against Apple in the recent lawsuit, most of which depended significantly on Apple having an unfair monopoly under California’s antitrust-focused Cartwright Act.
It’s been two weeks of video game releases and a lot of games came out in that time. Released on the 31st was KeyWe (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC), Rustler (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC), and The Big Con (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC). September started strong on the 1st with Ark: Survival Evolved (Stadia), Cloud Gardens (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One), Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition (Stadia), and Lake (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC). The 2nd was a busy game day as well with
Bravely Default II (PC), El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron (PC), Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (PC), Puzzling Places (PlayStation VR, Rift), Surgeon Simulator 2 (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One) and WRC 10 (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC) releasing. On the 3rd we had a few games released; Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC), Golf Club Wasteland (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC), and The Medium (PlayStation 5). We had a break for a few days until the 7th with more releases such as Bus Simulator 21 (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC), Encased (PC), F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4), Sonic Colors: Ultimate (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC) and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt (PC). The 9th had BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC), Night In The Woods (iOS) and The Artful Escape (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC). The 10th was our last busy day with Inked: A Tale of Love (PlayStation 4, Xbox One}, Kraken Academy (PC), Life is Strange: True Colors (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, Stadia, PC), Lost in Random (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC), NBA 2K22 (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC), Port Royale 4 (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S), Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! (PC), Tales of Arise (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC) and WarioWare: Get It Together! (Switch).
