Black History Month 2022: Chocolate Ninja Cosplay
As far as I can tell, I took my first photo of Jason of Chocolate Ninja Cosplay in 2014, but it was at MASSive Comic Con in Worcester, Mass., in 2015 when I realized what a talent he was. At the after-party, he demonstrated amazing breakdancing skills, and incredible martial arts skills as he was fight-dancing with another clearly experienced martial artist — all while he was dressed as Steve Erkle.
Talking to Jason over the years I’ve learned that he runs his own small business, is an instructor in multiple styles of martial arts, and still finds time to cosplay everything from comic book, movie and game characters. From fairly common cosplay like Blade and Black Panther to the only version of Kwame from Captain Planet I’ve ever seen, to genderbent cosplay like K/DA Akali — Jason has a wide and diverse array of cosplays in his repertoire.
The most recent set of photos I’ve taken of him are the ones where he is cosplaying Bruce Lee from Game of Death, in the yellow and black track suit that is the inspiration for the Bride’s costume in the big final fight in Kill Bill Vol. 1. We shot nearly a dozen tires to get that flying kick right, most of which were because I couldn’t quite capture the exact right moment. When I finally did, Jason was moving so fast the image still has some motion blur in it. He’s good at that martial arts stuff.
We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
