Jessica Jones Retrospective Gallery On Legal Drinking Age Day

Since today is National Legal Drinking Age Day, it seemed like a good time right the wrong of not having ever posted a gallery of cosplayers portraying hard-drinking Jessica Jones.

The “holiday” is legit, and while I can’t find the exact source of its creation, it seems to be in recognition of the fact that in 1984 the U.S. Congress made 21 the legal drinking age all across the United States. While there are plenty of characters known for imbibing an alcoholic beverage on the regular (Tony Stark, Cersei Lannister and Sterling Archer come quickly to mind), the Netflix series Jessica Jones implanted in viewers’ minds the image of Jessica dealing with her past trauma with copious amounts of alcohol.

Comic book fans know that aspect of Jessica’s life came from the comic book series Alias by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos. That series follows Jessica after she has dropped her superhero identity of Jewel and has become a private investigator. Alias is the core of both Jessica’ character in the Netflix series, and much of the plot of the first season.

Speaking of Jewel, while nearly all of the cosplayers in this gallery are portraying Jessica from the Netflix series, nikita_83 is one of the very few — if not the only — cosplayer I’ve photographed in Jessica’s costume as Jewel.

In the comics, Jessica has moved past her trauma, and met and fell in love with Luke Cage. They had a daughter together, Danielle, and are still married. While Jessica is primarily a mom and not a superhero, she still is an occasional member of the Avengers and the Defenders. She did return to the Jewel identity for a while, during which time she searched for a babysitter for Danielle. After one of the funniest full pages in comics, in which dozens of Marvel heroes make their short pitch why they would be the best babysitter, Jessica and Luke choose Squirrel Girl.

Cosplayers in this gallery include nikita_83, Felicia Aries, Alie_Lynn, faithnomoar, Mhysa Cosplay, misspelleditaly, and many more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
