The Disneyfication of Lucasfilms

Let’s talk about the Ranchor in the room for a moment…  Disney is buying Lucasfilms and everyone is worried about sullying the good name of Lucasfilm and it’s subsidiaries.  Then social media exploded with anti-disney and anti-Lucas sentiment.  Honestly it might NOT be a bad thing.

George Lucas, like many other powerful filmmakers and artists, can be better with people editing his work.  Remember Jar Jar Binks? Remember Hayden Christensen? Or dialogue that such as the “Your skin is soft… unlike sand… which is rough” that made you want to vomit?  Those were all the brainchildren of the unshackled AI of George Lucas.

This could go either way.  When Disney took over Marvel they put their hands in whatever pies already existed and added “Superhero Squad” which is ridiculous and in many ways dumb, but at the same time for a younger audience and (I will admit to watching it occasionally to say that) it actually kept a number of elements and Marvel inside jokes.  Let’s also not forget that The Avengers IS a Disney property, and as much as it was built upon the backs of a number of movies from various production companies outside of Disney, it is a tour de force when it comes to crossover stories and stand alone films based on pre-existing superhero properties.  Disney basically left it alone, didn’t “disneyfy” it at all.

It all depends on what type of roll Disney takes in the crafting of new projects.  If they do what they did with the major Marvel franchises and leave them alone we might get Jar Jar Binks in his own spin off movie, but if they are able to employ enough of their creative know-how (i.e reigning in the ideas and craft of the Lucas-verse) it could potentially be a very good fit.

  1. Fair take on the subject. I think the outrage is overblown. Disney isn’t going to own everything. Like how DC is with Warner. It’s competition at work and it should give us a better product. Lucas won’t be writing or directing and that’s good news for me since the force went from a mysterious phenomenon to a sinus infection.
