Anime Boston 2024 Sunday Gallery Part 2 By FirstPerson Shooter
According to statements by officials at the convention, Anime Boston 2024 had 24,000 pre-registered pass holders, close to a record. In addition, there were so many at-con badge purchases on Saturday that the convention had to halt selling them to keep the crowd from going over the capacity of the Hynes Convention Center. By any metric, pre-pandemic or post-pandemic, that is a wildly successful convention.
In conversations afterward, the overall consensus for why the great success was mainly due to the return of pre-pandemic levels of Japanese guests — musicians, voice actors, vtubers and cosplayers. In 2020 and 2021 there was no Anime Boston. In 2022 and 2023, the pandemic effects on international travel were still being felt. If this year’s Anime Boston is any indication, that reluctance is no longer an issue.
Even though the convention was winding down Sunday afternoon, there were still plenty of people in cosplay. Shows ranged from classics such as Claymore and Future Diary to Winter 2024 shows such as The Apothecary Diaries, Delicious in Dungeon and, of course, more Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. One group of Frieren cosplayers even included an Übel cosplayer. So, between Yuno and Übel, that’s two murderous psychopaths in one gallery.
Next year Anime Boston won’t be on Easter weekend for the first time in many years. OK, two years — the first convention back after the pandemic pause was in late May, just like next year’s date of May 23-25. And while many people, including myself, speculated that it was due to construction at the BCEC causing many conventions to shift dates, or the fate of the sale of the Hynes, that 2025 date was announced in 2014.
