Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Review

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is an action game developed by Platinum Games, and produced by Kojima Productions, for the PS3 & Xbox 360 consoles. It is the ninth game in the Metal Gear series, with a plot set four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. One thing I must say first off, I love Platinum games. They always make some over the top of the action games. Such as Bayonetta, Vanquish, and MadWorld. You play as the Cyborg Ninja Raiden, as you takes on Desperado Enterprises, a self-proclaimed private military company who involved in multiple terrorist attacks. After failing to stop them on his first attempt, Raiden is rebuilt as a new Cyborg and takes on Desperado in order to conserve peace.

The gameplay for Rising is incredible! One thing Platinum Games knows how to do is make incredible fighting mechanics. Raiden’s Sword style is lightning fast, and combos can mix and matched for awesome combos’ chains. My personal favorite is the cut and take feature, or the “Zan-Datsu.” By using this feature you can cut apart armor of Metal Gears, get out of certain situations, decapitate enemies, and heal yourself. It takes a couple of tries to fully master the feature, but once you get the hang of it, you find yourself using it over, and over. Also stealth elements that the Metal Gear Series is known for are still present, and over the top action takes place very frequently. This is obvious in the first missions as Raiden hurls a 30 foot Mech across a city. However one thing I love is, in certain sequences in this game, you will feel useless as Raiden, due to his physical or emotion state. This gives the player a little more depth to Raiden’s character, and you grow to love Raiden as you play the game.

The graphics are top notch, and at 60 frames per second, it is easy to understand why. The level of detail on characters is awesome, and stages look great. The music is by far some of the most fitting music in a game this year. I love how it fits into battles, and will change as more action happens. Especially during boss battles. This creates excitement, and you will feel like a kid all over again from the level of excitement you’ll get from playing this game. However the game is not perfect. The camera gets in the way. It’s an issue majority of games deal with, and it is quite common. However during battles with multiple enemies, and bosses, the camera angles positions can be a hindrance. Also ramping up the difficulty of the game will change your experience tremendously, your enemies become smarter; more appear on the screen, and work together to take you down. Despite the camera and the level of difficulty some may have with the Zan-Datsu feature, this game is a really solid game that should be played by all gamers out there who are not just fans of the Metal Gear series, but of action games themselves. I give Metal Gear Rising Revengeance a 4 out 5.
