It’s Morphin Time! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season One Volume One Review
When evil empress Rita Repulsa is set free by unsuspecting astronauts after 10,000 years, the villainess, along with her henchmen of evil space aliens set they’re sights on earth to wreck havoc. Intergalactic god-like being Zordon and assistant Alpha 5 recruit 5 teenagers with attitude to battle the forces of evil and protect the earth. Jason (Red Ranger), Zack (Black Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger),Kimberly (Pink Ranger) and Billy (Blue Ranger) are chosen to become an elite fighting force called “The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” When things get really hairy for this team, they summon assault vehicles called Zords which fuse together to become the Megazord. Later on, the rangers are joined by a sixth ranger Tommy (Green Ranger) who is to this day one of, if not, the most popular ranger in Power Ranger fandom.
The folks of Shout Factory have released this 90s kids show on DVD much to Power Rangers fans’ delight. Unlike most programming aimed at kids, what set this show apart is that it was live action and not an animated cartoon. Kids could actually talk to their favorite heroes. The folks of Saban turned these heroes into role models for kids to look up to. Back when this first aired there were concerned parents who were not too thrilled with their kids watching a show with excessive violence. This was all over the news, despite the fact that the show always had a positive message about not trying at home what the Power Rangers do in the show.
While I enjoyed the Shout Factory DVD release, I would have enjoyed it more if there was a special marathon mode where you can simply skip the opening and closing credits of each episode. I have seen this done with Funimation’s DVD release of the first volume of One Piece. I also would have liked it better if the Green with Evil saga was put on one DVD instead of the first four episodes of this mini series on one DVD and the last episodes on another disc. This may seem petty, since at least the saga is released on DVD, but still I am so into the Green with Evil saga, clinging to my dragon dagger, and then I have to get up and change discs just to see what happens next. Another addition to this Shout Factory DVD which would have been cool would be the special interviews of the Rangers which I saw back when some of the episodes were released on VHS. All three seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are available now on DVD by Shout Factory wherever DVDs are sold.
