REVIEW – Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Promise (Parts 1-3)
In a world of bending, where nations were separated by their affinities for earth, fire, water, or air, we fell in love with Aang, the Avatar, and his group of friends, as they made their journey to put the world at peace. Set immediately after the downfall of Fire Lord Ozai, and the coronation of Prince Zuko to Fire Lord, The Promise brings us another journey for the Avatar.
Fire Lord Zuko asks Aang to keep a promise, and after a year passes, the Avatar must decide whether or not he has to keep this promise. A battle within himself: his job as avatar, his duty to his friends, and his duty to himself, brings Aang to contemplate decisions that can ultimately make, or break, the world as it is. With help from his friends, and mentor Avatar Roku, Aang must come up with a plan before all hope is lost. Meanwhile, we are given a glimpse into Aang and Katara’s relationship, and Toph’s new school for Metal Benders.
Between the time of Avatar: The Last Air Bender, and The Legend of Korra, The Promise is a graphic novel you don’t want to pass up. The story is powerful, and all of the new characters brought a new light to the series. With returns from the original crew: Sokka, Katara, Toph, Iroh, the Kyoshi Warriors, and more, I really got a feel for this new adventure. Emotional as it was at times, the story it self was very heartfelt and enjoyable.
As for the artwork, Dark Horse really brought to life the story of the Fire Benders and Earth Benders, as well as the flashbacks that take place a few times within the novel. Introducing rain into the comics was brilliant, as it was the artists’ first time, and the novel comes with a sketchbook at the end, just so you can see every detail put into it. They also include never-before-seen artwork. Every detail, along with the dialogue, made it feel as though I were still watching the series on television.
If you loved the Avatar series, you’ll definitely love this new adventure.
Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Promise was published by Dark Horse Comics.
I had no idea there were any expansions on the Avatar universe (other than Korra). I was certainly attached to the both series, so I'm definitely checking this out.
