Newbie at a Nerd Convention
When I was getting ready in the morning for Queen City, I was unsure of what to expect- unsure what to wear, unsure what was going to happen when we got to the convention, and uncertain if I was going to have a good time. Other members of the Nerd Caliber staff are certainly nerdier than I am, so going to a convention for me was a completely different experience than it was for them- they knew what they were looking for to take pictures and even some of the people that we spoke to.
After we checked in, it was time to explore the venders and see the different cosplays. My first immediate thought was “wow these people are weird!!” But as I got to walk around and see the different cosplays, I began to realize that these people have a passion. They made their costumes and are walking around hoping that others like them too. The venders had some pretty neat stuff, however most of them I did not know the characters that were depicted, which made those venders less appealing to me…for now.
The first group of people that I went to take a picture of I was nervous to ask them if I could, however after a while I began to warm up a bit, and it became much easier. I am defiantly glad that I got the opportunity to attend Queen City Kamikaze; because the convention was smaller, I was able to get the big picture of what it’s like when Nerd Caliber covers an event.
As someone who isn’t really up to speed on nerd culture, it is very hard for me to understand sometimes the significance of nerd news, for instance, as I am typing this, Sammy Pipeline is sitting next to me writing an album review for Planetoid’s new album. He is bursting with joy at this, but I just don’t see why…but then again, I have no idea who Planetoid is, only that they are green, blue, and silver. Things like this happen a lot when you are dating a very nerdy person- Sammy Pipeline.
Although I do not know a lot about nerd culture, and nerdy things, I can incorporate it into my work through my art- my paintings and also my photography. I have another opportunity to expand my knowledge of the nerd world this weekend at TotalCon, and now that I know what to expect a little more than I did for Queen City Kamikaze, I am looking forward to going and learning more about the world I am walking into. With the rest of the Nerd Caliber crew with me, I know that we will have a completely epic time.
