‘Supergirl’ Teaser Makes Me Super Worried

The extended, 6.5 minute-long teaser for the upcoming CBS series Supergirl is available on YouTube now, and as I was watching it, all I could think of was that it must be a Saturday Night Live parody.

You know, like the one SNL did that made fun of the fact that Marvel/Disney clearly has no idea what to do with the character Black Widow, and presented a fake trailer for her fake solo movie, presenting her as a bumbling, giggling girl in a cliché romantic comedy. Imagine my surprise when the teaser for Supergirl gives off exactly the same feel — even right down to similar music.

This is not the fault of any of the casted actors. Melissa Benoit, as Supergirl/ Kara Zor-El, is pretty, engaging, and gets across the sense of a young woman having a great deal of fun finally getting a chance to show off what she has been hiding all her life. However, she also does a creditable job of acting the most clichéd, silliest superhero writing in a long time. Case in point, assuming the extended teaser isn’t conflating two different scenes to keep from revealing something, Kara is brought to tears and apparently an existential crisis simply by the words of a xenophobic government man (Hank Henshaw, the eventual supervillain Cyborg Superman) who says he hates aliens and tells Kara she should go back to getting coffee (which she does as an assistant to Cat Grant, played wonderfully by Calista Flockhart).

All it takes is a through-the-door pep talk by sis (Did I mention the clichés?) to get Kara right back on that horse … or cape, or, well you get the idea. Seriously, though, I was fully expecting Kara to open the door and be wearing a wedding dress, as she accepts her sister’s sage advice and rushes out to marry the ne’er-do-well that she truly loves.

I will give the show a try, and I hope that the teaser is just a really bad cut (the choice of cheesy rom-com music makes me doubt that), but right now it seems like Warner Bros. and CBS want to make something as polar opposite as possible of the bleak, murderous Man of Steel movie that Supergirl is connected to.

Check out the teaser below and let us know what you think of it.
