Our Valued Customers: Conversations from the Comic Book Store

Another Free Comic Book Day has come and gone, leaving comic fans a break of time between the next issue of their favorite title and conventions. If your visit to the local shop–in my case Humungo Comics in Pottstown, PA–made you dream about a life behind the register in the shop, then Our Valued Customers: Conversations from the Comic Book Store is right up your alley.

Tim Chamberlain (nicknamed MRTIM) has written and illustrated almost 90 cartoons, giving a snapshot of a real life discussion that happened while he worked in a comic store. For geeks and nerds (my people!) the question of Batman vs. Superman or X-Men vs. Avengers are as important as sports fans talking NHL playoffs or the Superbowl.

A quick flip through the book and it’s clear that most of the cartoons have very similar looks, which is what makes the book fun. The props like Monster Energy Drinks, Tap Out tee shirts, and themed costumes expand the single frames, giving hints about what came before and after the moment.

This is a great extra birthday or Father’s Day gift for that comic-obsessed fan in your life, who are sure to have a craving post-Avengers/Dark Knight Rises. Just be aware that the price of comedy is sometimes the occasional curse word or idiotic sexist rant.
