Anime NYC 2019 Saturday Gallery by Adam Etheridge
We now come to my second, and final set of photos from Anime NYC 2019, from Saturday at the convention.
I began my day on Saturday taking photos in the South Concourse, which wasn’t overly crowded for the first couple hours of the day. I stayed in the area to get some photos at the Persona group photoshoot scheduled for 1 p.m., and by that time the area had become very densely populated. The photoshoot organizer had to give up on getting any full group photos due to lack of space, with three other group photoshoots being held in the area at the same time.
After about a half hour at said photoshoot, I decided it was time to bail out of the area. I then spent some time mulling around the less crowded North Concourse. As the convention takes place in November, after daylight savings time ends, the sun set before 5 p.m. during the event. With the natural light going away, I decided my best bet would be to take photos in the exhibit hall during the last couple of hours of the show.
I have to say that I sorely missed taking photos in the area just outside the doors of the South Concourse of the Javits, as I generally do for several hours each day during New York Comic Con. A handful of cosplayers could be seen outside doing scheduled photoshoots with professional photographers, but there was no general foot traffic outside due to the cold November weather.
There was certainly no lack of great cosplay at Anime NYC this year. Although I have a decent size photo gallery (with 100+ images) from Saturday, it only showcases a very small fraction of the many fabulous cosplayers in attendance. Between my inability to take photos outdoors, the early sunset time, and the general overcrowding across the Javits (which was not an issue last year), I found it difficult to get settled. Should I cover the event again next year, I will need to reassess things and come up with a better game plan, as it’s clear I will not be able to take photos in the manner I am accustomed to.
Although I’ve aired my share of complaints about the convention, I do want to stress that Anime NYC is by no means a poorly run event. It is still enjoyable overall, and has a lot to offer. Here’s hoping that the organizers work out the kinks and have an even better show in 2020.
