Beach Cosplay Gallery On National Beach Party Day

Today is National Beach Party Day, yet another in the seemingly endless parade of marketing-made “holidays.” But, since it is something that seems to have been adopted pretty widely, I thought it would be a good time to celebrate with a gallery of photos I’ve taken at beaches of cosplayers in swimwear cosplay.

Usually, I include in these marketing holiday gallery posts something about the origin of the event, but National Beach Party Day (or simply Beach Party Day in some uses) is a mystery. I can’t find out who or what organization first came up with the idea despite going pretty deep in Google. It was first observed in 2022, according to one site, so it shouldn’t be so difficult to dig up information about its origin. And it might be an offshoot of the Aug. 30 event National Beach Day, which seems to have started in 2017, but they may be unrelated.

Anyway, the earliest photos in here come from 2015, when I had the idea to do a bunch of swimsuit cosplay featured photo sets at beaches here in coastal New England. The first of these (Black Widow, Harley Quinn) were shot at Nahant Beach on the Nahant Causeway in, umm, Nahant, Mass. By the way, Nahant is the model for the island town of Lovecraft, Mass., in the comic book series Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. The only other location (Yang) that summer was Hampton Beach in Hampton, N.H. In 2016, Nerd Caliber held the first of what has become an almost annual beach event, when we gathered a bunch of people together (Ariel, Enchantress, Roadhog, Berthier, Rin from Love Live) on Labor Day weekend who weren’t attending DragonCon for a fun beach shoot on Plum Island in Newburyport, Mass. OK, technically we were so far down the island to get away from weekend crowds, we may have been in the town of Rowley.

All of the shots after 2016 were from the Cape Cod Cosplay Photoshoot weekend that has been held nearly every year (COVID pandemic aside) since 2017 at the Southfleet Motor Inn in South Wellfleet, Mass. These include Wonder Woman, Misty, Lucoa, Sonico, Gen. Holdo, Kwame, Quint, and Harley Quinn and Deadshot. In case you want to be a part of the next event, it will be this Oct. 25-27, 2024. We’ve held the event in the fall for the last few years because the inn will be closed for the season and we will have unfettered use of the facility, but many of the shops and restaurants on Cape Cod will still be open before closing for the season.

The sharp-eyed among you may have noticed one pair of pics taken in the winter. My cousin, ldcos618, who co-manages the Southfleet, called me to suggest a photoshoot of her Dwalin cosplay in 2015 when much of Massachusetts Bay froze over. The photos were shot at Skaket Beach in Orleans, Mass., with the brighter one at an angle where the camera is pointed straight up into Massachusetts Bay, with nothing but ocean between us and Gloucester, Mass. As you can see, there is no open water even on the horizon of the photo. The second one, at sunset, is pointed almost straight west at Plymouth, Mass., and you can barely see a line of water where the ice near the beach started to beak.

Cosplayers in these shoots include ldcos618, Chocolate Ninja Cosplay, itslorenia, bunnymooncosplay, ayame.hime, chocobobutt, Moonie Warrior Cosplay, crash_the_stampede, electron_warrior, and more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
