Captain, My Captain: Nathan Fillion Cancels Philly Comic Con Appearance

In a cruel, ironic twist, Philadelphia Comic Con will be short a captain in 2013, just one short year after uniting all of the Star Trek captains on one stage for the first time.

Nathan Fillion, best known for his breakout role as Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds on the short-lived series “Firefly,” just canceled his appearance, leaving every Brown Coat from Earth to Canton heartbroken. Sure, the other Serenity crew members Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin and Jewel Staite will have tales to tell, but fans will be longing for the reunion that might have been.

A fan of his acting as Castle and Green Lantern, I particularly feel the sting of his absence. I’d argue that the body of work on “Castle” is even more significant than “Firefly” since Fillion was allowed to develop the character over a longer, more satisfying story arc. To me, “what was accomplished?” is more interesting than asking “what might have been?”

In any case, all VIP and group photo tickets related to Fillion have been refunded and attendees have the option to buy in once more.

Alas, news like this seems to prove you can take the sky from me.
