ColossalCon East 2024 Baldur’s Gate Group Shoot
In a bit of a departure from the usual convention photo galleries I submit to Nerd Caliber, which generally feature one or two cosplayers in most photos (BTW, don’t worry, there will be some of those coming soon), I’m kicking off my coverage of Colossalcon East 2024 with group photos from a Baldur’s Gate photoshoot / meetup I hosted on Saturday of the convention.
Although the meetup was open to people cosplaying characters from any title in the series, I believe all of the cosplayers at the meetup were portraying characters from Baldur’s Gate 3. Released in the summer of 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 received critical acclaim, winning Game of the Year awards at numerous game award ceremonies including The Game Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, and the Golden Joystick Awards. Its unique and captivating characters sparked interest and creativity among many in the cosplay community. Over the course of the past year, almost every comic, anime, and video game convention has had at least a handful of fans in attendance that were cosplaying characters from the popular role-playing game.
Shadowheart, Astarion, and Gale are a few of the most commonly cosplayed characters from the game, so I was not surprised to see multiple attendees that were portraying these characters join the meetup. There were also some more rare sightings, including cosplay of Orin, Karlach, and an ULTRA rare Lae’zel cosplayer, which I had not previously ever seen in person at a convention. A handful of cosplayers at the meetup had swim/beach themed outfits, which are common at Colossalcon East.
I ventured outside of the water park, my usual haunt during this convention, to host this meetup at the Kalahari’s River Patio. Thankfully, the patio has a roof over it, because it was raining throughout the meetup, and most of the day on Saturday. Due to the weather, I didn’t quite get to host the meetup in the way I had envisioned. There is a stone wall with some decorative items located just a few feet from the River Patio, which would have made for a more interesting backdrop. Sadly, the downpour eliminated that possibility. I also wanted to get all of the swim-themed cosplayers together for a short shoot at the outdoor water park after the main photoshoot. Needless to say, that part of the venue was not open on Saturday due to the weather.
I would have loved to have spent a bit more time with everyone and taken some solo shots of cosplayers at the meetup, but that was another plan that I decided to scrap due to weather related reasons, as I believe the temperature was below 60 degrees at the time of the meetup, and I definitely was not dressed for the occasion. Despite all of that, there was a great turnout of fantastic cosplayers for the meetup/photoshoot, and that’s what matters most in the end. Thank you to all those who attended, and perhaps we’ll give it another try next year!
