Comic Review: Robyn Hood #3
Review: Robyn Hood #3 (Zenescope)
By: Erin DeBorba
When we last saw Robyn in Issue 2, she had just learned of her destiny to help the people of Bree, had become “one with her bow,” and had defied King Charles not once, but twice.
Now, fast forward a year and we are in issue 3. The comic opens with Robyn finding a poster of her self. A wanted poster to be exact, with her title being “Robyn Hood.” We catch a glimpse of a man watching her as she turns to leave, tossing the paper onto the floor. Robyn is now sporting new clothing, fitting of a Myst resident, and a green hooded cape.
As Robyn heads to one of the streams in Sherwood Forest, she tells us of the last year, and her plans to kill the king. Then, she’s attacked by the man we had seen watching her. After fighting the man off, he nearly laughs and tells her she’s passed his test. Confused, Robyn demands to know what he is talking about.
The man then describes a group of “merry men” who wish to take down the king, in a sort of revolution.
We flash to a scene of King John telling the towns people about a competition they must partake in. It is a battle of sorts. With his ultimate goal being to draw Robyn Hood out, he thinks his plan is golden.
We then switch back to the man telling Robyn about the king’s plan and attempt to draw her out, and she agrees to help with this revolution, knowing this may be her chance to go home. She then asks the man what his name is, to which he responds “They call me Little John.”
Little John takes Robyn to meet the rest of the Merry Men, and ends up living, training, eating and being around them for a month. She still feels alone. Her and Will Scarlet (one of the Merry Men) end up having a small battle for fun, whilst talking about pasts and such.
The morning of the battle, or tournament, that King John created, Robyn and the Merry Men suit up in masks and capes and make their way over to the grounds. As she sees how the King is treating these people, there is no doubt in her mind that tonight, there will be a revolution, and tonight, the king will die.
Robyn Hood #3 has once again kept me eagerly awaiting issue 4, and wondering what could happen at the King’s tournament. After being in Myst for a year, Robyn has learned a thing or two more about her surroundings, and with her new friends, who knows what could go down. Pat Shand has, once again, done a wonderful job with the storyline, and the artistry done by Rob Dumo and Adam Metcalfe certainly add to the experience.
Make sure to keep a look out for my review of Robyn Hood issue 4, coming soon!
