Date Change Didn’t Slow Down New Jersey Gamer Con
New Jersey Gamer Con returned to South Jersey on the first weekend of July this year, for its sixth show in The Garden State. Formerly held in Runnemede, the convention moved 10 minutes north this year to The Crowne Plaza Philadelphia-Cherry Hill in Cherry Hill, NJ.
The Crowne Plaza offered more than enough space to comfortably accommodate all of the convention’s guests and exhibitors. The new venue features free parking, a lovely patio and pool area, and a full bar and restaurant on site. Those attendees that wished to explore other dining options could find a large number of other restaurants in the local Cherry Hill area.
As one would expect based on the name of the convention, gaming is the main attraction of New Jersey Gamer Con. The convention boasted a 24-hour gaming area, where attendees could play classic games on vintage arcade cabinets including Commando, Popeye, Gauntlet, Rampage, Out Run, Street Fighter II, and Mortal Kombat 4, just to name a few. Those attendees that wished to test their skill against other gamers could enter a number of video game tournaments organized by Hitbox Arena. Gamers battled it out in games including ARMS, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Pokken Tournament DX over the course of the weekend.
The event also featured a room dedicated to tabletop gaming, courtesy of The Game Guyz who made games available for fans to play, including HeroQuest, Dungeons & Dragons, Axis & Allies, and Settlers of Catan.
New Jersey Gamer Con also hosted a handful of guests related to the world of gaming for fans to meet and greet during the convention. John St. John (voice of the original Duke Nukem), Brian F. Colin (game designer and creator of Rampage), John Parrish, and Daniel Pesina (motion capture actors from the original Mortal Kombat) attended this year’s event.
Other convention highlights included a cosplay contest hosted by J1-Con, panels covering a variety of topics, and a marketplace area where vendors sold a variety of games, collectibles, artwork and other merchandise.
The organizers were challenged with holding their event on a holiday weekend at a new venue this year, but nevertheless put on a great show. They plan to hold next year’s event on their usual dates, the third weekend of July.
Cosplayers in the gallery include Chillest Gaming, Disturbed Cosplay, Lacuna Cosplay, d.va.peaches, and many more.
