Demon King Daimao – Anime Review
So I was browsing through Netflix and found a SENTAI FILMWORKS anime by the title of Demon King Daimao (Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaō). I had heard of it, but never seen it. Seeing as it was on Netflix for online viewing I started watching it. Like I do all my animes I gave it my Four-Feeling and it passed. I did not know what to expect from this show. I did not know who the cast was, so I cracked a smile to hear Chris Patton voicing the main character, Akuto Sai, and Luci Christian as Junko Hattori. The cast is pretty great. The director for the show was Steven Foster. He directed Eileen Dover as Fujiko Etou, Greg Ayres as Hiroshi Miwa, Hilary Haag as Lily Shiraishi, Leraldo Anzaldua as Boichiro Yamato, Maggie Flecknoe as Korone, Melissa Davis as Kena Soga, Rozie Curtis as Mitsuko Torii, and Stephanie Wittels as Eiko Teruya.
This 12 episode anime starts out with you hearing thunder, rain, ominous music, and a baby crying. A woman holding the baby talks about how the child is their hope. So she lays the baby outside a gate and leaves it there. Generally I would call this bad parenting, but apparently the baby needs to be hidden.
After the creepy dark scene everything brightens up. Turns out this show has more fan service than I had originally thought. The story really is about love, magic, and a bit of fighting there at the end. By a bit I mean a lot. Like you know, the last 7 or so episodes.
The story obviously orbits around Akuto Sai. Akuto finds out the day he is admitted into the Constant Magical Academy, that his future occupation is going to be Demon King. Of course it’s a school so word spreads like wildfire and people treat him like an outcast. I don’t wanna throw out spoilers so I’m gonna leave that at that.
As far as I can tell it has the girls and the harems, the guys that can’t translate the girls, magic that maybe a little on the over-powered side, romance, explosions like Michael Bay would like them, fan service, a decent plot twist, action, and battling to the death. This is a bloody anime so if you are weak in the stomach I don’t recommend this one for you. Well, If you got through Fullmetal Alchemist then you will be okay with this one.
My favorite thing about this anime was that I kept wanting to know more. As each episode ended I skipped the ending credits to start the next episode not because the ending credits were boring, but because I wanted to see what happened next.
Overall, I give it a 4.5 out of 5. It’s not my all time favorite but I will for sure be a owner of it. Speaking of owning it, Amazon has this anime for sale. It is priced at $33.99 for the Demon King Daimao DVD Complete Collection, and $40.99 for the Demon King Daimao Complete Collection [Blu-ray].
