DMC Presents: ‘Birthright’ Blends Heroic Fantasy And Horror

When young Mikey Rhodes disappeared in the woods while out with his father and brother the worst was assumed. No body was found, there were no clues pointing to the boy’s whereabouts and the blame was placed on his father. Mikey’s disappearance tore the family apart.

The family’s shock over their missing son turns to confusion when a grown man shows up claiming to be Mikey. How could this full grown man be the missing son? Mikey has only been missing for a year and this man is a large muscle bound warrior who has clearly seen his share of battles. The man claiming to be Mikey tells them that on the night he disappeared he was sent to the war ravaged world of Terranos where time passes more quickly than it does in our own.

Upon arriving in Terranos he was told the tale of how he was the chosen one who would save the world from the evil Lore. For years he trained to meet his destiny fighting many horrifying creatures along the way.  After defeating Lore he has returned to earth to track down followers of Lore and bring them back where they belong. Obviously the police and Mikey’s family question the sanity of this story but after a few conversations with his older brother his identity is confirmed, Mikey is back!

Birthright from Image Comics follows Mikey and his quest to track down the followers of Lore but as the story goes on we find that not all is what it seems. Writer Josh Williamson is one of my new favorite writers and he deftly weaves a tale of fantasy and horror with lots of twists and turns. The art by Andrei Bressan is fantastic going from the the fight scenes on earth to the wild creatures that inhabit Terranos! So far there are two trades out and issue #15 is out this week so there is still plenty to check out Birthright!
