DMC Presents: Obi-Wan Tales Shine In ‘Star Wars’ Ongoing Series

Just over a year ago Marvel took over the Star Wars license after Dark Horse Comics carried the torch for more than 20 years. The change in publisher coincided with the reset button on the expanded Star Wars universe meaning Marvel had a clean slate to work with. The synergy between the Disney owned Marvel and Lucasfilm has provided some excellent comics during the past year. Marvel has brought some of their top talents to the table to tell the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, Han and the classic Star Wars gang.

One of my favorite things about the ongoing series is the one shot Obi-Wan Kenobi adventures that takes place between story arcs. Early on in the series Luke discovers the diary of Obi-Wan and through its pages he learns about the Jedi Master’s time as a hermit on Tatooine. In the one shot adventures, writer Jason Aaron and artist Mike Mayhew give us a glimpse of Obi-Wan’s time on the desert planet keeping watch over Luke.

In this week’s issue we get a look at young Luke’s desire to become a pilot, his Uncle Owen’s determination to save Luke from his father’s fate and we see just how hard it is for Obi-Wan to give up his Jedi ways. When we first meet Obi-Wan in A New Hope he is a man shrouded in mystery and it’s neat to get some of his back story. With Darth Vader hunting down the Jedi, he tries to keep a low profile but he can’t help being the hero — when some Jawas are being targeted by Tusken Raiders he refuses to sit by and let it happen. His actions are bound to draw attention to his presence when he disrupts the business of Jabba the Hutt the gangster puts a bounty on his head.

So far Jason Aaron has done a fantastic job of capturing the feel and voices of the Star Wars Universe. If you’re a fan and interested in getting into the new back story of the characters do yourself a favor and pick up the first couple of trades for Star Wars and the Darth Vader series they won’t disappoint! Until next week, May the Force Be With You!
