DOOM Still A Great Single-Player Game – Multiplayer Tho…
I was looking forward to the reboot of DOOM since it was announced at E3 last year. It was one game that impressed me from the start. And I gotta say it did not disappoint — the single player mode for the most part, however.
Created by Bethesda Softworks for the PS4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, DOOM is a modern update or take on the classic 1993 shooter of the same name. With its powerful weapons, blood and gore, it will definitely keep any gamer’s attention.
In the single player mode, you wake as the series main protagonist, known unofficially simply as Doomguy. You find yourself at an outpost overrun by demons and you have to kill your way to freedom, so to speak. Kinda iffy on the story mode, since it was a little whatever, but I think that is due to me being drawn into the action more and not really paying much attention.
The gameplay is fast and fluid. It is easy to fall in love with the intense violence. Shooting feels balanced and the executions are unique and very creative, especially when you get your hands on the chainsaw. These kills are graphic and not meant for the squeamish. But the real stars are the weapons. Using iconic weapons such as the super shotgun and the BFG, and using the power ups located throughout the map, will give you plenty of ways to take out these demons. Overall I found the single player mode enjoyable and there is a level of exploration, as you can find collectables spread across the map.
The multiplayer, on the other hand, I have mixed feelings about. While the multiplayer is very fun what with mixing the classic gameplay of DOOM with modern multiplayer shooter mechanics, it makes it feel sorta generic. I do enjoy playing it, however. The Demon Runes, which allow you to change into a Revenant for a short time, do make it feel unique but it can get sorta dull after long periods of playing. Sadly, the multiplayer really doesn’t cut it for me. It sorta feels like every other shooter out there. It’s not bad at all, I honestly could play this longer than I could some other shooters that have come out, like Halo 5 or Star Wars Battlefront. But it feels like the gameplay mechanics choices that went into this hold DOOM back and they didn’t play out as well as things do in the single player.
Overall, DOOM is a great update to the DOOM series. I honestly enjoyed playing through the single player and can see myself playing the single player again, and even the multiplayer I will revisit. You can check out the multiplayer mode in the official trailer from Bethesda below. If you are looking for a gory bloodbath of a shooter, then DOOM is the game for you.
I give DOOM a strong 3.5 out of 5. Hopefully there will be some updates and future DLC to add to the game to fix these minor gripes to make DOOM‘s multiplayer as much fun as the single player game.
