There are plenty of conventions that are famous for really outstanding cosplay — Katsucon, for example. There are cons famous for the best cosplay in their particular fandoms — AnimeEXPO, New York Comic Con and others. But all of that can be found at Dragon Con in Atlanta, and even more so, Dragon Con is famous for some of the most obscure, craziest cosplay you can find.

It has been years since I’ve been to Dragon Con but I am still one of its most ardent cheerleaders any time the subject of “must-attend cons” comes up. Part of the reason for my boosterism is the almost 24-hour public content available at Dragon Con, over four wild days and nights. Another is the wide number of “tracks” or areas of interest. If you want to attend panels on science fiction books for four days, you can. If you want to play Magic: The Gathering tournaments for four days, you can. Or if, like me, you want to photograph cosplayers until you can’t keep your eyes open, you can.

And a part of that cosplay photography reason is the “OMG” moments. Where else can you see people cosplaying from the mid-1980s cartoon Dungeons & Dragons? Or not one but two Ben Stiller characters — Derek Zoolander with a friend cosplaying Hansel, but even more obscure, someone cosplay as Tugg Speedman from Tropic Thunder as his role in the trailers shown at the beginning of the movie from the fake movie Scorcher.

In this gallery are cosplays of Kai and Zev from Lexx (but not Xev), of Birdperson from Rick & Morty, of Ninja from Die Antwoord (the Fatty Boom Boom video body paint), and two different Viv’s from The Young Ones. Oh, and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, with someone cosplaying a member of the comic book Guardians, Moondragon. And so many more amazingly weird or obscure cosplays.

Among the cosplayers in this gallery are amazingdarkstone, Jessica Mercy, and many more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
