Dungeons And Dragons Cosplay Retrospective Gallery
Back in early March eOne and Wizards of the Coast announced that Hugh Grant was cast as the villain in the untitled upcoming movie based on Dungeons and Dragons, and that Sophia Lillis (It, I’m Not Okay With This) would be playing an unnamed role. They join already announced Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Rege-Jean Page in the cast. With that in mind, I thought it would be the right time to pull together a gallery of D&D cosplayers from the past.
Starting 2013, the only cosplays I could say for sure were D&D-based were the team from the old cartoon, and a few people cosplaying Drizzt Do’Urden (shout out to local boy R.A. Salvatore). Then in late 2016 a couple of D&D campaign podcasts started to hit big and everything changed.
The Adventure Zone showcased three brothers and their dad in a campaign and started in 2014. Critical Role launched a year later, and featured a handful of well-known voice actors in their own campaign. As the two podcasts grew in popularity both would go on to add different media to their empires, such as comics and YouTube videos. I was surprised to find that the first photos I took from those two shows were of Taako from The Adventure Zone, in early 2017. I always assumed it was Critical Role that was first.
I am absolutely sure that there are many cosplays not in this gallery of people cosplaying as their own D&D character, because I recall people telling me so. But I can’t recall for sure which fantasy warrior or wizard cosplay photos fit that bill. And I am also confident I am missing some characters from the two podcasts. Both have had multiple campaigns at this point, each with a roster of new characters. So my apologies for anyone I missed.
