E3 2014 Review: Sony Bores With PS4 Stats
Coming off the amazing success of the PlayStation 4, Sony had only one thing to do at E3 2014 to keep its lead over it’s competitors — show off games. At that moment Sony only needed to show off some new grade A games that will grab the attention of its legion of fans, and those who are still on the fence about the PS4.
Sadly I must say I found its press conference pretty boring. Sure, it showed amazing new gameplay for Mortal Kombat X, and Batman: Arkham Knight but other than that most of the games were pretty lackluster. Uncharted: A Thief’s End elicited a very positive response from the audience, but Sony did the one thing that can kill a conference for me, and that was talk about stats of their consoles, such as how many hours people have played online, how many multiplayer matches have been played, etc. — it is no surprise that nobody truly cares about this.
Sony mentioned a new service called PlayStation TV that will allow certain Sony TV owners to play PS Vita games on their sets, as well as YouTube, and Twitch coming to the PS4. In light of last year’s showcase of games, I felt this year it should have focused on games more than the software. The software updates could have been saved for another time.
PlayStation 4 is dominating in sales this year, so it didn’t need any extensive amount of press time and I felt that the games were more important than any software updates coming. They have some good exclusives coming, including a remastered version of my choice for Game Of The Year of 2013, The Last Of Us, and exclusive content for games such as Mortal Kombat X, Destiny, and Arkham Knight, so the PlayStation 4 is looking a lot more appealing to me.
As far as Sony’s goal for E3 to showcase some great new games for the PlayStation 4, it accomplished that, however showcasing software updates, unneeded statistics, and the overall lack of excitement for their exclusives caused them to lose in the press conference department for me.
