Fan Expo Boston 2024 Saturday Gallery Part 1

Saturday morning of Fan Expo Boston 2024 did not have a promising start. Before I even ordered my Lyft ride in, I found out our third team member couldn’t make it, and shortly after arriving, I discovered our fourth and final team member was not going to make it to the convention. Again, as I said in a previous article, no shade on them, everyone had a powerful real-life thing that needed attention. On the way in, Lyft’s mapping system apparently didn’t alert the driver that the Sumner Tunnel was closed until just before the exit to the tunnel, so it rerouted us through the Ted Williams Tunnel (and apparently everyone else coming into Boston from the North Shore) to eventually pick up Massachusetts Ave. practically as far south as Roxbury. This added at least 20 minutes to my trip. Had the mapping system given my driver enough notice, he could have taken Route 16 to the Tobin Bridge right onto Storrow Drive and only added maybe 5 minutes to the trip (which is what it did on Sunday).

Then there was the badge problem. Explaining the whole thing would take way too long, but the gist is, because of some last-minute personnel issues within Fan Expo, we got Press passes, not Programming passes. While that wasn’t a problem when I was setting up on Friday, Saturday morning the Hynes security guard at the Hall C doors was very adamant that I didn’t have the correct badge. She was right, but I also had a booth inside the Hall and needed to get in to set up for the day. It took a call to the Programming manager to clear it up. However, it also showed me that my inherited familial tremors (i.e. “old person shakes”) were worse than I thought. Stress and anger can trigger them, and I was so angry that my legs started shaking badly enough I had to lean against a wall while waiting for the problem to get cleared up. (Surprise, for those who know me as the level-headed Rodfather — I can get really pissed off.)

Once the day got rolling, however, it became one of the best days at a Fan Expo Boston I’ve had. I was nearly constantly busy, but not so much I couldn’t take a needed bathroom or water bottle break or have time to chat with friends. Among those was the surprise return to Boston after eight years of David of Instagram’s dtjaaaam fame. It was great catching up with him. If you are somehow not familiar with David’s work, please click that link — I am always aspiring to be as good as he is, and he keeps pushing that bar ahead.
