Fan Expo Boston 2024 Saturday Gallery Part 4
As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I really get a kick out of seeing surprising, obscure cosplay. Very late afternoon on Saturday at Fan Expo Boston 2024, Christopher Robin Wetherell came back to the studio space with some cosplayers he had just finished working with on a photoshoot. One of them, cosplayer odd.rolls, was wearing a grey-green bathrobe and what seemed to be a black nylon wig cap. She agreed to get photos and came into the backdrop, then pulled the black nylon down her face to just under her nose, as a form of mask, and took a very menacing pose. It looked really familiar, but I couldn’t place it. She then turned around to show the words written on the back of the robe: “Fear the Red Dragon.”
I said, “Wait, are you cosplaying as Dolarhyde?”
She practically flipped out in excitement that I recognized the character, and we spent many minutes gushing over one of literature and film’s greatest serial killer villains, Francis Dolarhyde, from the book Red Dragon, its two movie adaptations Manhunter and Red Dragon, and (her exposure to him) the final season of the series Hannibal. She was then joined by my cosplay friend trashcan8574, cosplaying as the tabloid journalist Freddie Lounds (a woman in the series Hannibal as opposed to a man in other adaptations). Since the actors portraying Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter from the series — Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikklesen respectively — were both guests at Fan Expo Boston, it made sense for them to be cosplaying as those characters.
Also in this gallery is Alorahble, who was my next-door neighbor as a cosplay guest, but who didn’t ever see we were neighbors until late Saturday, because her booth was on the other side of my backdrop. I thought I hadn’t seen her since New York Comic Con 2018, but she reminded me I took her photos at PAX East in 2022.
