Fan Expo Boston Friday Cosplay Gallery Part 2

The most frustrating part of Friday at Fan Expo Boston 2023 wasn’t the confusion over our badge types. The staff at Fan Expo handled that with grace and flexibility. No, it was that fact that, while us guests, artists or exhibitors had to be set up by 1:30 p.m., the food court — the only place to get anything to drink aside from a couple of water bubblers in the top floor hallways — didn’t open until 4 p.m. Thankfully, after I made a post on Facebook asking for anyone showing up that day to maybe bring some water, my friend Juan showed up with a whole six-pack of the tall-boy Poland Spring water bottles.

Offsetting that annoyance was the great revelation that the food options weren’t just what the staff at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center cooked up for most events, but outside restaurants. Lowell-based Mediterranean cuisine food truck Chez Rafiki was one of the vendors, but what became my go-to meal choice for all three days was the Newton-based pizza chain Sweet Tomatoes. I don’t recall that this was an option in previous years, but for the last three conventions we were set up inside the Cosplay Contest judging room, so I never even looked at the food court.

This year we were located in the Cosplay Guest row, with voice actor guests on the other side of our space. At one point, Monica Rial and Ian Sinclair stuck their heads through the curtains to make a really funny joke (which would take too long to explain). Suffice to say it was a reference to the nearby exhibitor who had brought in a baby kangaroo and a baby sloth that people could hold and pet.

This was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, many of the characters being cosplayed here wouldn’t exist. Please consider donating to the Entertainment Community Fund here.
