For The Win Project: Helping Kids Achieve Nerd Dreams

I recently had the opportunity to help out The For The Win Project. This project is near and dear to the hearts of everyone here at Nerd Caliber. Their amazing team works with kids who are battling illness. They take professional photos of the girl or boy, and through the magic of Photoshop, they design and print a totally unique movie poster featuring the kid as their favorite superhero or movie character. At the unveiling, each kid gets an incredible full-size framed poster, prints, and other goodies. It’s a great way to put a smile on the faces of a sick kid (along with every family member, medical staff member, and volunteer at the event) who is fighting an epic battle to beat illness.

Well-known Boston cosplayers Matches Malone and Kuno Yuro, both of whom are involved in several children’s charitable organizations, reached out to us to participate in unveiling the amazing Wonder Girl poster for a young girl named Chloe. She was a bit overwhelmed when she first saw Batman and Wonder Woman waiting for her in the playroom at the Floating Hospital for Children, but she quickly got over her nervousness. She was so excited to see the amazing movie poster of her as Wonder Girl, with the names of the incredible hospital staff who care for her in the usual ‘cast and crew’ part of a movie poster. She was even more excited to have Wonder Woman sit with her and read stories.

As a cosplayer, a photographer, and a comic book fan, this got me right in the feels. It’s such a cool way to help people who need a win. And as you can see, Wonder Woman had a great time knocking the block off Batman in a spirited bout of Rockem-Sockem Robots. I hope I have the opportunity to participate in many more of these unveiling events.

  1. Thank you so much for everything you did for my daughter Chloe! She is still talking about how amazing the day was, and she was laughing that night about being emotional at first!

  2. You are very welcome, but we wouldn’t even have heard about this or been there if it wasn’t for an invitation from Matches and Kuno. All credit to them for their continuing work to support people who need it.
