G.I. Joe Cosplay Retrospective Gallery

Today is Hug a GI Day, and in addition to that being a wonderful sentiment, it also is an obvious invitation to pull together a gallery of G.I. Joe cosplayers. The toy line goes all the way back to 1964, when it was called America’s Movable Fighting Man and featured a different figure for the then four branches of the U.S. military — Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

Arguably the best known of the entire line of characters is Cobra Commander, created in 1982 by Larry Hama in the Marvel Comics stories about G.I. Joe. The entire conflict between COBRA and the Joes is an invention of the 1980s — just in time for the relaxation of federal rules against creating TV shows for children that are entirely commercials for existing toys for children. It makes sense for the COBRA characters to be more popular than most of the Joes for cosplayers, because their costumes and designs are so much more interesting than the standard military outfits the Joes wear.

Cosplayers in this smallish gallery include Raymond Ramos Cosplay, and many more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
