Get The Word(s) Out!
So, are you blogging? Or writing? Or any form of publishing? If not, I’d like to encourage you. Heartily.
Publishing of any (and every form) is a huge part of our culture, the culture of nerds, geeks, eggheads, otaku, and every other passionate intellectual. It’s been there from the earliest days until now.
It was the silk-printed “magazines” of the literati in China.
It’s the snarky commentary created by transcriber-monks.
It’s the letter columns of early SF magazines.
It’s the zines that boomed in the latter 20th century.
It’s the endless archives and fansites that sprouted up in the internet age.
And today? It’s blogs and self-published books and more.
This is our heritage. This, my fellow nerds, is what keeps us who we are. A giant legacy ranging from elegant printing to blogs debating the Jungian Symbolism of Sephiroth’s sword attack (my answer: he has great hair, just let it go).
We’re nerds and otaku and geeks. We thrive on information and communication and interaction. That drives what we are, preserving that which is known, speculating on the unknown, and creating the new. How many great ideas, stories, inventions, and just plain cool things came about because a few geeks were communicating?
So I want to encourage you to go do this, to blog, to publish, to even just share links on Twitter. I want you to get out there and create, speculate, and interact.
Why? Because you have something you share. Because you have a unique viewpoint. Because you may get inspired. Because you may inspire others.
And because you’re a raging nerd like the rest of us here, and it’s just what we do.
So go on, see if they need people here. Or if you have a professional viewpoint, contact me at my pro-geek blog, http://www.fantopro.com/. If you are looking for people for your blog or site, give me an email.
Let’s keep communicating, my nerds and geeks. We’ve got a future to make.
