Granite State Comicon 2024 Saturday Part 2
You could expect that from a convention that produces three galleries, the galleries would be fairly evenly distributed over the hours the show is open — morning, midday, afternoon. In reality, most photos come from a three-hour block of show time from around 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. That was definitely not the case at Granite State Comicon 2024. Because it was really difficult for people to even see my photo space due to the massive celebrity autograph line during those hours, realistically this middle of three Saturday galleries probably has most shots from prior to 11 and after 2.
As I said in the previous post, despite the challenges from the insanely large crowds, Saturday was a great day. One of the reasons was my celebrity almost-accident encounter. Just before the Exhibit Hall opened at 10 a.m. I had to leave the hall to get a last-minute extra press badge. As I exited the doors next to the gated entrance, I saw how long the line was — backed up doubled on itself and then past the entrance to fill the hallway I stepped into. Seeing I needed to get through, a guy helpfully stepped back to let me through. As soon as I stepped into the narrow lane between the two attendance lines, I hear a deep voice saying firmly but pleasantly, “Excuse me! Coming through!”
To my left, John Rhys-Davies was practically Naruto-running directly at me in the narrow space between lines, clearly in a hurry to get to his table before the hall opened. I quickly squeezed back into the open space in the line behind me and said something like, “Yes, sir. All you, man.” The best part was his handlers, who are supposed to be in front of him to clear people out of his way, running flat out behind him trying to catch up.
Later that day, after the crowds started to thin a little, I went out to grab a sandwich at the hotel shop (thanks for the free cookie, check-in attendant), and on the way back I again saw Rhys-Davies, this time with one handler in front of him and much fewer people around. He recognized me, nodded and said something like “Hello again,” this time with a knowing grin. These two very momentary encounters practically made my whole weekend.
