Granite State Comicon 2024 Sunday Part 2

Granite State Comicon 2024 ended for me one hour early on Sunday because I had to get my rental vehicle back to Salem, Mass., before the shop closed at 5 pm. So, I packed up at 3 p.m., even though the convention closed at 4 p.m. Luckily, I was parked on the same garage floor as the Exhibit Hall, so it was a quick stroll. Good thing too, because I only made it back with 15 minutes to spare — I completely forgot about the late summer and early leaf-peeping traffic leaving New Hampshire and heading back to Massachusetts.

I’m very interested in seeing how next year unfolds for Granitecon after this first year of adding the SNHU Arena to its location. Will the insanely large attendee surge on Saturday turn into an ongoing higher level next year, even if it isn’t the craziness of quadrupling the largest previous attendance number? Was adding the SNHU Arena worth it to the convention, enough so that it makes sense to keep using it? Not that I have any first-hand experience to draw from — one of the downsides of having a studio space at a convention is that I almost never get a chance to check out any other aspects of the con. (Edit: The day after this post went live Granitecon announced the 2025 dates — Sept. 19-21 — and the fact that it would again include the SNHU Arena and the Doubletree hotel.)

The general consensus from friends who went to Granitecon last weekend was that it was mostly fun. Even those people who decided to leave after just a few hours because of the massive Saturday crowds didn’t express much anger or frustration about it — it was more common to hear people worry about how the con staffers were handling it all. That is credit to the folks at Double Midnight Comics and all the people they have drawn together to work the convention every year. Granitecon is still — one day of giant crowds included — one of the best-run conventions anywhere.
