Hollow Knight Is Full Of Fun And Surprises
Welcome to Indie Spotlight! Today we delve into a world of critters, trinkets and redemption — in Hollow Knight!
Little is known at first why you, a voiceless traveller, have arrived to the land of Hallownest. Much of the domain is underground, locked away by the previous members of royalty. Some inhabitants have been brave enough to travel downward in hopes of restoring order. Most have found themselves lost or trapped. It seems you may be what Hallownest needs to thrive once more…
Hollow Knight is a new-age addition to the Metroidvania genre. The entire graphics set is hand-drawn. The world and its characters are based on the insect kingdom. You have access to a map that fills as you explore, and you bring with you a Nail (sword) as your main means of combat.
You begin with virtually no direction, other than a well that drops into the city below. Exploration of the underground will include rescuing villagers, saving grub babies, collecting charms (which can be equipped for a large variety of passive upgrades) and taking on loads of baddies. The environment takes you through creepy caverns, wild gardens, acidic mountains, and more.
Certain checkpoints give you great improvements like dashing, long-range attacks and double jumping. Each one you unlock allows you to reach so much more of the world, which by the way has countless hidden pockets and entrances to entire new regions. I was constantly impressed and awed by how much more I had left to discover (and still do).
This is a must-play for any fan of challenging, fast-paced platforming action. The beauty of this game lies in the intricacies of the story and the aura of its characters. I hope you find yourself blissfully lost in the journey as I was.
Hollow Knight is available on Steam and Nintendo Switch!
