‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ Among 2016’s Coolest Looking Games

For years gamers have said there are no original IP’s in the industry, however at E3 this summer we got a glimpse of a brand new game that will hopefully change that mindset. Horizon Zero Dawn was one of my personal favorite games at E3 this past June. Coming from Guerilla Studios, the studio that brought us the Killzone franchise, Horizon Zero Dawn is a third-person action adventure game with a new and refreshing take on the post-apocalyptic world idea.

The trailer alone had me hooked, but with gameplay shown it was even better. In this game the player will be taking control of the archery hunter Aloy. Her design is amazing, and I am personally glad we have a new heroine video game character. Mixing elements of stealth gameplay with high action, we see her traversing landscapes, and using the bushes to hide from the immediate danger of these mech-style animals. Taking one down with a quick stealth kill, she moves on to these deer-looking mechs to harvest these vials on their back and comes in contact with a giant mech that looks like a Tyrannosaurus. Fighting the T-Rex mech was amazing as she swapped between different styles of arrows, reminiscent of Green Arrow or Hawkeye, using electrical arrows, explosive arrows, rope arrows, even a heavy piercing arrow to finish it off before stabbing it in the “heart.” I was very impressed with this combat and I loved the brief glimpse we got of the ruined city landscape as a giant falcon mech swooped up next to Aloy.

Personally I am really looking forward to this game. One, it’s a new IP that piques my interest; two, it’s a new female main protagonist and; three, it’s a whole new world to explore, and the gameplay has RPG elements as well.

I cannot wait to see what else this game has in store, and what other characters will be in this world. I can already imagine some spectacular cosplays of this coming out in the near future. Horizon Zero Dawn releases exclusively on the PlayStation 4 sometime in 2016.
