Houston Deadpool Responds To His City’s Needs
As Hurricane Harvey has finally wrapped up its rage in Texas and its neighboring states, Houston still continues to struggle as thousands still need aid and close to 40,000 homes have been destroyed. While many are helping those afflicted by the storm, one person is using cosplay to bring smiles to the children hurt by the hurricane. His name is Houston Deadpool. He took a few minutes of his time to speak to me about what’s happening in Texas.
A mechanic and Army veteran, Houston Deadpool is a big fan of Deadpool, so much so that he made Deadpool his legal middle name. He became involved in cosplay when on Halloween he saw the people’s positive reactions to his costume, especially with children and felt investing time and money on this artform would be a great way to continue making fans and children happy.
After the hurricane first hit, parts of Houston were underwater. There have been many volunteers helping, including Houston Deadpool (although at first not in costume), riding on boats to help people stranded get to shelters. Seeing how emotionally troubled children were during this time, it was Houston Deadpool’s idea to don the Deadpool mask in hoping it would bring them some joy.
When the shaken and frightened children saw Deadpool, their faces lit up in smiles, he said. Many people in the community shook his hand, thanking him for bringing food and supplies, and took photos together.
“I do this for the kids. They are why I suit up. The reaction I get from the kids makes wearing the suit [in humid, wet weather] worth it.”
Houston Deadpool will continue to deliver food and supplies to shelters and The George R. Brown Convention Center until the waters completely recede. I asked him what can we do to help him. He says that other cosplayers have heard of his exploits and are coming down to help him. He asked if we can focus on local charities and shelters as they need it the most.
If anyone wants to give him money directly to help the city, Houston Deadpool does have a GoFundMe at the link here.
Slightly biased here since I know Houston Deadpool personally. He is awesome. Loves his city and the people here. He normally volunteers his time all throughout the year, not just for this one disaster. Great guy that actually does care about his community.
