Image Comics Previews (3/21/12)
Image Comics has been putting up some really interesting books that is rivaling Vertigo in creativity and originality. We present to you our thoughts to some of Image Comics newest releases.
Darkness #101
For fans of the Darkness run in the 1990s with Marc Silvestri, this comic is a welcome return. Jackie Estacado thinks he has his incredible power, the Darkness, under control. He has carved out a life for his family, though it is crime, he believes he can keep the worlds separate.
But the Darkness is more than simply a power, it works against Jackie to ruin his happiness. Get on board for this story arc, which will pit him against the Darkness…with only one survivor.
Hoax Hunters #0
All of the monsters and myths in the world are real, and the hosts of a reality show called Hoax Hunters are out to hide them before the world knows of their existence. Despite a promising cover, this issue was lack luster, weighed down by a tired reality show premise and art that doesn’t set any particular mood.
Reality shows are beginning to wane—hopefully comics can move away from them as well. Additionally, the X Files did the traveling investigation of myths better.
’68 Hardship (One Shot)
This issue hit me where I live, combining the realism of ‘Nam with the emotional gravitas of The Walking Dead. The violence and mood hit hard, leaving me wanting this to become a longer series. It’s gore…and I want much more. Horror comics at their bloody best.
The Mice Templar Vol. 3 #6
This series, though vaguely familiar from comic book store shelves, is completely new to me. My first reaction: hell to the yes. Great, angular look to the panels and characters. A series that compliments some of my favorites (like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Yosaki Yojimbo) while completely standing on its own. Do yourself a favor. Scamper down to your local comic store and buy it.
The Walking Dead #91
If you aren’t familiar with this AMC hit, which just finished season two, stop reading and go watch the pilot. Yes, I’ll wait. Now you get what everyone is talking about?
This is some great source material and I’ll be surprised if the show can maintain the same level of quality over its entire run. This is a creative team at the height of their powers hitting like Andre the Giant in The Princess Bride. I expect many more fans, starving for the flesh of this show, will find themselves picking up this comic to fill the weeks until the third season.
