John Constantine Gallery On Day 1 Of Pride Month

It’s the first day of Pride Month, and I thought it would be a good time to highlight that DC Comics canonically pansexual icon, John Constantine. Sure, he is described in most wiki entries as bisexual, but he reveals in the 2020 animated movie Justice League Dark: Apokolips War that he had a previous relationship with King Shark, a barely humanoid male shark, so pansexual seems to fit best now.

Given Constantine’s tendency to send bad guys to Hell, I also thought he would be a good choice for this year’s first Pride Month article. I’m not saying there are any people I would like to see burn in Hell for their harmful or even potentially deadly public policies toward LGBTQ+ people, but I am saying that if Constantine were real and had a GoFundMe to pay for magical supplies, I would back it.

Constantine was created in 1988, but it only took seven years for him to be identified as bisexual, in 1992. That’s pretty early in the comic book world. Deadpool, Marvel’s pansexual (or “omnisexual” in the words of Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza), wasn’t officially declared as pansexual until a tweet by writer Gerry Duggan in 2013. And despite one NBC executive’s attempts in 2014 to label its version of Constantine in the short-lived live action NBC series as straight, fans were having none of it. Matt Ryan, who played the character in the NBC series and since has moved on to play him in DC animated films and the CW’s Arrowverse shows, has stated that he views Constantine as not just bisexual but “bi-specieal.”

So, in Pride Month 2023 (and all throughout the year) I ask that when it comes to matters of sexuality and identity, you be more like John Constantine — open and accepting, but also not very welcoming of those who are bigoted and intolerant.
