Journalist Cosplay Gallery On World Press Freedom Day

Freedom of the press — to be free of government restriction on what can be reported to the public — is such an important part of the proper functioning of any truly democratic society that the founders of the United States baked it right into the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It is just behind the prohibition on the government establishing a religion, and the guarantee of freedom of speech in that list of rights and prohibitions. World Press Freedom Day highlights how important that concept is, and how unfortunately rare it is around the globe.

So for today’s retrospective gallery I pulled together a small assortment of people cosplaying journalists.

Since I decided to only use Clark Kent and not Superman, and Peter Parker not Spider-Man, most of this gallery is made up of photos of April O’Neil from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, and Piper from Fallout 4 — a surprise hit of a character among cosplayers. There is, however, one surprise cosplay of Rita Skeeter from the Harry Potter novels and movies. While I hate calling her muckraking style of journalism real “journalism,” freedom of the press means accepting the trash along with the treasure.

On a personal note, I’ve been a journalist for more than four decades, and a fan of democracy for even longer, so press freedom is very high on my List Of Really Important Things — as it was with the Founding Fathers. While I can’t hope that it reaches the same heights for you, I do truly hope it is at least somewhere on your own LORIT (acronym not official). On another personal note, I am very pleased that this gallery let me choose Nerd Caliber team members for the article images — our founder Manny up above as Clark Kent and our Associate Editor Gregg below as Hagrid.

Among the cosplayers in this gallery are Wonderllama Photography, DestinyNickelsen, thatgirlerin, Cassadilla Cosplay, sarahjcosplay, attackmodejoe, misskitscrafts, Everyone’s Hero Cosplay, Sweet Elite Cosplay, thewhimsywizard, ankasadventures, whenfandomstrikesofficial, Cosplay Dad, and many more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
