Ms. Marvel Gallery On The First Day of Eid al-Adha

Today is the first day of the Islamic holiday Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice. Among all holidays in all three Abrahamic religions, Greater Eid as it is also called honors God giving Abraham a lamb to sacrifice so that he didn’t have to sacrifice his son Isaac (which he was totally down to do, to be clear. The Old Testament gets dark, man). That makes it possibly the holiday based on the most ancient event in the shared tradition of Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

During the festival, Muslim families are supposed to sacrifice an animal for feasting and divide the meat among three groups — family, relatives and friends, and the poor. That latter group is indicative of the very strong tradition in Islam of caring for the sick and the poor. In Islam, caring for the less fortunate is not just a beatitude that can be read and too often ignored, it is built into many of the traditions and holidays that are part of the faith.

Mind you, I’m an atheist, so most of my information about Eid al-Adha comes from some quick research, so my apologies for anything I get wrong.

To recognize Greater Eid, I am repurposing a retrospective gallery of Marvel Comics’ most well-known Muslim superhero, Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel. Kamala Khan in the comics and the Disney+ MCU series was born of Muslim Pakistani immigrants living in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Created by editor Sana Amanat, writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, this fourth character to carry the Ms. Marvel name was the first Muslim character to lead her own comic book, which debuted in February 2014. Arguably the most successful character launch for Marvel Comics in decades, the first collection of issues into a single volume, Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal, won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2015.

In the comics, Kamala Khan is an Inhuman. With apologies for the spoiler, at the end of the recent series, we find out that Kamala isn’t an Inhuman, but a mutant. Isn’t it amazing what buying the rights back to the mutants when Disney bought Fox allows the Disney arm Marvel Studios to do? Iman Vellani will return as Ms. Marvel in the movie The Marvels, with Captain Marvel (Bree Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), due in theaters Nov. 10

Cosplayers in this gallery include LovelessXSpirit, nikkigeeks, and many more.

We now use Smugmug to present cosplay photo galleries and will post all photos there, with a link to each gallery in its own gallery article. This will allow us to give you higher resolution images to download — still for free.
