Ms. Marvel Retrospective On News Kamala Khan Has Been Cast
Last week Deadline broke the news that Disney+ had cast Canadian newcomer Iman Vellani to star as Kamala Khan in the upcoming MCU series Ms. Marvel. Like the character of Kamala Khan, Vellani was born of Muslim Pakistani immigrants, the difference being the actress is Canadian and the character is an American teenager from Jersey City, New Jersey.
Created by editor Sana Amanat, writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, this fourth character to carry the Ms. Marvel name was the first Muslim character to lead her own comic book, which debuted in February 2014. Arguably the most successful character launch for Marvel Comics in decades, the first collection of issues into a single volume, Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal, won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2015.
In the comics, Kamala Khan is an Inhuman. While those super-powered people exist in the Marvel television universe (see Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or the amazingly bad Inhumans) they haven’t yet been seen in the MCU movies. With Kevin Feige in charge of both movie and TV productions now that both have been placed under Marvel Studios, either Ms. Marvel will the the first introduction of Inhumans into the Marvel movie world, or Kamala Khan’s powers will get a new origin.
