New ‘Starfire’ Book and Look Keeps The Redesign Train Rolling
“Batgirling.” According to Bleeding Cool, citing an unnamed internal DC source, that is what the company is calling the redesigning of female characters to be less … well, sexist. The latest to get this treatment, according to news today from DC, is Starfire.
The alien girl who went from sexy but innocent member of the Teen Titans, to barely clothed femme fatale in the New 52 relaunch, is getting her own title, from the creative team that made Power Girl a superstar, Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner. Joining them will be artist Emanuela Lupacchino, who has done work for Marvel, Valiant and DC, with her longest stint being on Marvel’s X-Factor starting in 2010.
This concept of “Batgirling’ could just as easily be called “Captain Marveling” since the redesign that launched the trend was when Marvel promoted Carol Danvers from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel and changed her butt cheek-revealing leotard to a flight suit that covers her from neck to boots. That kicked off a trend that has swept through comics and shows no sign of abating. With Marvel’s own reboot happening after the Secret Wars crossover series, who knows what the heroes in that camp will look like?
Among the other new titles DC announced for a June launch are Constantine: The Hellblazer, by Ming Doyle and Riley Rossmo; a new Justice League of America title; a new Black Canary book from Batgirl co-writer Brenden Fletcher; a Cyborg solo title; and even Bat-Mite apparently gets his own book.
